5 Litres Polyquat Algaecide  Ref: 014001012
We suggest two ways of destroying algae in pool water - chlorine (calcium hypochlorite) and 'poly-quat'. Calcium hypochlorite has an instant effect but it has no residual or on going effect. Poly quat algaecide does have a residual effect and can be dosed at the beginning of the season to prevent algae occurring.

What's best? For quick kills of free floating algae, calcium hypochlorite (shock) is effective -- unless you have very high stabilizer levels, above 100 ppm.

If there is a lot of visible algae on the pool sides and bottom it is important to remove as much as possible by scrubbing before carrying out chemical treatment. This will allow the chemical to get at the algae embedded in the pool fabric.

Calcium Hypochlorite as an Algaecide

To use adjust the pH to between 7.2 and 7.6. Add 15 grams of calcium hypochlorite per cubic metre. Keep the filter free of debris circulate the water overnight. Allow the available chlorine to drop below 3 ppm before entering the pool. If this takes too long excess chlorine can be removed using chlorine remover.

Poly quat Algaecide (polyquaternary ammonium chloride)

Poly quat algaecide is recognised by the UK Department of the Environment as safe to use in swimming pools. It is supplied as a liquid. Poly quat algaecide is absorbed by organic debris such as leaves and dead algae so it is important to clean thoroughly with a brush or vacuum cleaner before starting the chemical treatment.

As an algaestat, that is to prevent algae before it is established, dose 1 litre of poly quat algaecide to each 45 cubic metres (10,000 gallons) of pool water. Each week add 250 millilitres to each 45 cubic metres (10,000 gallons) of pool water.

Algae are difficult to remove once established so it is best to prevent them getting started.

Here are three simple tips to avoid algae in the first place.

Brush regularly (weekly?), especially walls and deep end, to prevent invisible algae colonies from forming.
Test your pool's sanitizer levels regularly and never, NEVER let sanitizer levels get low.
Make sure your filter is working properly, and that your pump runs at least 6 hours per day, preferably divided into two different intervals

Copper containing chemicals are sometimes used as an algaecide on pools but in our opinion levels effective at killing algae are also effective at staining pools and blonde hair!
